Fertility and maternal labor supply in Japan: Conflicting policy goals?

چکیده
Griffen, Andrew S., Nakamuro, Makiko, and Inui, Tomohiko— Fertility and maternal labor supply in Japan: Conflicting policy goals? Using panel data on Japanese mothers, this paper estimates the impact of fertility on maternal labor supply using twins as an instrument for the total number of children. We find that having twins actually has a longer term positive impact on maternal labor force participation in Japan. To understand this result, we present evidence that the effects of age and cost of children can generate this finding, are particularly salient in Japan and differ in important ways between twins and non-twin families of the same size. Implications for fertility and labor supply policy in Japan are discussed. J. Japanese Int. Economies 38 (2015) 52–72. The correlation between female labor force participation rate (FPR) and total fertility rate (TFR) across developed countries has switched from negative to positive. This paper provides a structural explanation of the historical pattern via changes in substitutability between mother’s direct childcare and indirect market care. متن کاملThe One-child Policy: A Macroeconomic Analysis
This paper studies the effects of a one-child policy. A benchmark without the fertility constraint is compared to a counterfactual experiment with the fertility constraint in place. The results suggest that imposition of a one-child policy promotes the accumulation of human capital and increases per capita output. In partial equilibrium, an unskilled adult’s welfare is lowered by the policy. Ho...

متن کاملIZA Discussion Paper No. 409
Fertility, Female Labor Supply and Public Policy Historically, in virtually all developed economies there seems to be clear evidence of an inverse relationship between female labor supply and fertility. However, particularly in the last decade or so, the relationship across countries has been positive: for example countries like Germany, Italy and Spain with the lowest fertility rates also have...
